White Canes came to the Lions attention in 1930. Lion George A. Bonham, watched as a man who was blind attempted to cross the street with a black cane that was barely visible to motorists. The Lions decided to paint the cane white to make it more visible. A White Cane Ordinance passed in Peoria granting blind pedestrians, with a white cane, protections and the right-of-way. On June 30, 1925, Keller addressed the Lions Clubs International Convention in Cedar Point, Ohio, USA. She challenged Lions to become "knights of the blind in this crusade against darkness." Keller Speaks the Lions Listen. In 1931, Lions began promoting the use of white canes for people who are blind. Today, LCI have a rich program, learn about Today's Lions Vision Programs. |
