HIGHLIGHTS OF THE PAST 50 YEARS
FOUNDING
West Windsor, NJ - November 1952
In the fall of 1952, a group of town leaders organized the Lions Club in West Windsor. These founders included:
James C. Sandilos, Chester A. Page, Walter F. Conover, Jr., Robert Dilatush and James MacKenzie. Over a period
of several weeks, these men brought in thirty-nine other like-minded individuals to form the club. The first Charter
Night was held at the Princeton Junction Fire House on Saturday, December 13, 1952 with the Hightstown and
Princeton Lions sponsoring the club.
One of the first awards the club made was to a resident of West Windsor.
This was a fifteen year old lad, Warren Froelich, who saved another boy who had fallen through the ice while skating.
The charter members of the West Windsor Lions were civic leaders. Their roles included membership on the School
Board, the Planning Board and the Township Committee, and district and state offices in Lions. This set
a tradition that continues today as West Windsor Lions continue to play and active role in our community and in
Multiple District 16.

West Windsor Lions co-sponsored and organized the Plainsboro Lions Club.

and issues of community interest. It was discontinued in favor of a for profit entity. Editors included Lions Stefan Guzy,
Charles Raleigh, Ed Atkinson and Ed DiPolvere.

Sponsored the township's Pop Warner Football league.

Over the past half century the West Windsor Lions have sold items as a means to raise funds for the clubs
charitable activities. We have sold: baked goods, brooms, Christmas fruit cakes, light bulbs, Entertainment Books,
fertilizer, mints and for several years held a "white elephant" auction of household goods. This auction was held at
the barn of Lion C. Larry Dey.
The West Windsor Lions have conducted raffles and under the symbol of the White Cane have solicited
donations form the public. The White Cane solicitations have been held several times each year since the early 90's at
most area shopping centers.
The West Windsor Lions have sponsored and co-sponsored fund raising events for the general public
since 1964. Among these have been the Fire Company Circus, Community Charity Dinner Dance, the Race for Vision,
the War of the Worlds 50th Anniversary, the Art Auction, Breakfast with Santa and the Renaissance Fair.
The Renaissance Fair has been held at Mercer County Park since 1999 and attracts over I0,000 people.
The Fair is the largest fund raising event that the West Windsor Lions have.
Throughout its history the West Windsor Lions Club has initiated programs to serve the community.
These have included some already cited as well as providing eye exams and glasses to needy individuals in the
community, and since 1964, a scholarship program for local high school students.
Service to the Blind and Deaf:
The West Windsor Lions Club has continuously helped to fund three camps for the blind and helped to financially
support other groups such as Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic and Housing and United Services.
Each September, the West Windsor Lions along with the Lions from several clubs in the District, host
a picnic for the students of the Katzenbach School for the Deaf. Each year the Club also provides a number of
scholarships and TTY devices for Katzenbach Students.
The West Windsor Lions have funded eye testing equipment for each elementary school in the local
school district and, for several years, conducted annual amblyopia screenings in all the elementary schools.
Community Service:
Lions International is the world's largest service organization. The West Windsor Lions serve the residents
of West Windsor by offering eye and glucose screenings throughout the year. We also sponsor a community blood drive
each summer.
The Lions Club purchased the first "jaws of life" for the Twin W Rescue Squad, the first bullet resistant
vests for the West Windsor Police Department, and a defibrillator for the Twin W Squad.
For the past half century the West Windsor Lions have served the residents of West Windsor and New
Jersey in a multitude of ways. There will always be a need for a group of caring individuals to meet the needs of
disadvantaged individuals. As Lions, we put our differences aside and offer assistance to everyone in need. This support
of others is clear in the Lions Toast:
"Here's to you, not above you, not beneath you, but with you."
